If you’re in search of some Christian books for kids, you are in the right place! I’ve created a list of some of the best books to teach your children the gospel, encourage them in their character, and help them grow in their Christian faith!
As believers we have a responsibility to train our children in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6). This is a heavy calling, but thankfully we do not have to do it alone. Not only does the Lord walk alongside us, He also gives us other believers to learn from and glean wisdom.
If you’re in search of some books for you, I recently did a post on 10 of the Best Christian Books for Moms.
Choose theologically sound Christian books for kids
With all the wisdom being shared in the world, we have to use discernment when it comes to what we share with our children. The books I have chose are theologically sound and high quality. They are great resources for pointing your children towards the gospel.
Think of these books as a starting point, not an ending point. I love using resources and books in our family, but the real learning comes when the questions arise. Question after question will pop in their mind and it really helps me gain insight into where they are in their understanding of the gospel.
At the end of the day, my hope is to point my children to the cross. These books have been very helpful in doing so, and I hope they help you as you disciple your children as well!
1. WHEN I PRAY FOR YOU
When I Pray for You by Matthew Paul Turner
Get ready for a good cry if you get this one! The first time I read this to my kids I could barely get through it! It’s full of everything I want to pray over my children and is definitely my favorite Christian book for kids. It’s a great choice for any age, and would make a great baby shower gift.
Here’s a snippet: “I pray Heaven protects you, that you’re generous and kind. That your brave little spirit never ceases to shine. That you believe in yourself and follow what’s true. That your confidence grows just as fast as you do.”
2. THE GARDEN, THE CURTAIN AND THE CROSS
The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross by Carl Laferton
This is one of our favorite books! I just love the way it paints the picture of the Easter Bible story. It can be complex for children to understand. This book condenses it while still telling the full story. It is theologically rich and has beautiful illustrations. My kids often want to read this one over and over again. It also sparks a lot of questions.
There is a coloring and activity book available as well!
3. FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH
For the Beauty of the Earth by Folliot S. Pierpoint
This is a beautifully illustrated book of an old hymn written in 1864. I love learning and teaching my children hymns, and this is a great way to do it! You can sing or read it to them. Either way, I just love the picture this hymn paints. The book really makes this hymn come alive.

4. LEADING LITTLE ONES TO GOD
Leading Little Ones to God by Marian M. Schoolland
Out of all the resources we have, this is the one we have used the most. We use it as a devotional to help instill Christian values. The theology is sound, simple and Biblical. There are definitely things in here that are beyond what my girls can understand (my oldest is six), but I think it’s good to plant those seeds. They ask a TON of questions with this one, and we often end up learning together. It was written in 1995, so keep that in mind! I sometimes adapt as I’m reading to make it more relatable.
I love how it’s broken into sections. Each day we read a section and the next builds upon it. Highly recommend this resource!
5. THE WORLD IS AWAKE
The World is Awake by Linsey Davis
I love the simplicity of this book. It’s great for young children. It points to God’s goodness and the blessings he gives us. It helps remind our children that there are so many things to be thankful for.
This is a great one for the toddler years because of how simple it is, but older kids will enjoy it as well!
6. THE JESUS STORYBOOK BIBLE
The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones
There are a lot of children’s Bibles out there to choose from! The Jesus Storybook Bible is our go to children’s Bible. This is a great resource for sharing the gospel with your kids. It is so easy for them to understand, but also paints a theologically sound picture of what the Bible says. It keeps them asking questions, which is always my goal! I love the illustrations as well.
7. INDESCRIBABLE
Indescribable: 100 Devotions about God & Science by Louie Giglio
My girls really enjoy this devotional. Each morning they get to flip through the pages and pick one. I love how God and science are tied together in this book. Louie Giglio does a great job of intertwining it all together. It’s full of fun facts and he always relates it back to God’s word. This book shares of God’s wonders in such a unique way! It is geared for ages 6-10, but there is also a version for ages 0-4.
8. THE GOSPEL
The Gospel (Big Theology for Little Hearts)
This book is simple enough for toddlers to pay attention to, but deep enough for older kids as well. It sparks a lot of questions and is a great (short) way to share the basics of the gospel and learn more about the Word of God.
9. WHAT EVERY CHILD SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PRAYER
What Every Child Should Know About Prayer by Nancy Guthrie
I can’t post about the best children’s books for kids without sharing one about prayer! It’s so important that our children know how to pray, but I often find it hard to fully explain it to them. This book breaks it down to a child’s level of understanding using God’s Word to explain it. We haven’t gone through this whole book, but what we’ve read has been so helpful!
Nancy Guthrie offers a wealth of resources on her website, check out her site here!
10. GOOD, GOOD FATHER
Good Good Father by Chris Tomlin
This is a great book to teach children about the true character of God on a level they can understand. It’s one of our favorite Christian children’s books. It’s geared for ages 4-8. It reminds children that they are loved by God no matter what (which is something we need to be reminded of as well!). It’s a calming read at bedtime and a great way to spark family conversation. What greater way to encourage our children than to reassure them that they are loved no matter what!
