Choosing a Christian homeschool curriculum can be so overwhelming, so don’t let this be a post that overwhelms you! I just want to share what we have been using and loving this year, in hopes that it’ll help you decide what is best for your homeschool family.
My kiddos are currently 7, 5, and 3 years old. This is the first year we are doing formal lessons consistently. We use a Charlotte Mason approach, and so far it has worked really well for our family. We have been doing Bible time much longer than we’ve been doing language arts and math. So I’ll have quite a bit more Christian resources to recommend than core curriculum.
Christian Homeschool Core Curriculum: Kindergarten + First Grade
For math and language arts, we are using The Good and the Beautiful. We have tried one other curriculum, and this has been the best fit for our family. There are so many games incorporated (especially in preschool and level K primer), and it has such a beautiful and simple approach. My oldest (now in first grade) thrived with their kindergarten curriculum.
Keep in mind that it is advanced. They offer a placement test on their website, which is super helpful if you are switching from public school to homeschool.
We really love their Christian homeschool math curriculum. They recently updated their math and simplified it even more. The lessons are shorter and much easier on the parent. My older two kids (5 and 7) have excelled in math and I credit the simplicity of the curriculum.
I didn’t require any supplementation for my 7 year old when it came to language arts. She learned how to read solely from their curriculum. My 5 year old was not quite ready for the kindergarten level, so we started her on the ABC See, Hear, Do books and those have been amazing. We are on level 3 and she seems more prepared to start the Good and the Beautiful’s Kindergarten curriculum. I’ve also heard great things about the Dash Into Learning Reading Sets, but I have not personally used them yet.
Three year old “curriculum”
I say “curriculum,” because there really is no curriculum we’re using for my three year old. Normally I wouldn’t even think to start any bookwork until she’s seven. But, she is begging to do “school.” So I made her a little binder filled with traceable worksheets from HelpingCreate on Etsy. I’ve got one with her name, numbers, and letters on it. It’s enough to fill her need to do “school” like her sisters.
Unit Studies
This is the first year we are doing Unit Studies. My kids (and myself!) have really loved this addition to our core curriculum. They get excited each week knowing they’re going to learn about something new. We really love everything we’ve used from Treehouse Schoolhouse. We did An Expectant Easter, Connected Christmas, and are currently using Treehouse Nature Study: Winter. The Biblical approach for her Easter and Christmas studies were theologically sound and simple enough for my kids to understand. All of her crafts and activities are so well thought out and it’s really enjoyable for our family.
This February, we will be using Brighter Day Press for the first time. She recently released her Valentine’s Day Guide and we are so excited to dive in (use code VALENTINE for 15% off!).
According to her website, it includes “5 days of interactive lessons about the origins of Valentine’s Day and the different types of love, including a daily devotion and discussion questions.” What better time to teach your kiddos about Biblical love than the week of Valentine’s Day?! We’re really looking forward to it.
Tip about Unit Studies
There is definitely some preparation required for Unit Studies. I tend to plan a few weeks in advance so we can have the library books, craft supplies and anything else we may need. I order our library books every two weeks for pickup, and try to order all of the craft supplies before we start the study. That makes the daily preparation very minimal.
Christian Resources – Devotionals and Daily Books
Now for my favorite part – the Christian resources we use every day. This can seem like an overwhelming list, so take what works for your family and leave the rest! We have slowly added to our Bible time over the years. We’ve gone through the Jesus Storybook Bible, Louie Giglio’s Indescribable Devotional for kids, and many other books that have helped my kids grow in their faith.
We are currently using The Ology. I can’t say enough about this book. It is so theologically sound, and has sparked so many meaningful conversations. It’s been great for my seven year old, and is a little advanced for my five year old – but she still listens and participates in the conversation.
Christian Homeschool Resources – Tools
We have enjoyed using Happy Hymnody over the years. She focuses on one hymn a month, and provides a printable and a video. I print these out and put them in a binder, as we plan to go back over these through the years.
This year, we started using the ABC’s of God’s Attributes from Tiny Theologians. This has been super helpful for my kids, and for myself as well. We all need those daily reminders of who God is according to the Bible, not who we think He is according to our day. These simple, yet powerful cards help build a firm foundation of God’s character. They have a ton of other Christian homeschool resources as well, so definitely check them out!
One last resource we have loved is by September and Co. They have so many educational resources, but we have really loved using their Beginner Creature Character Cards. Each card has an animal and character trait on it, and goes in depth about that character trait on the back. It defines the character trait, lists “I can” statements for the kids to say out loud (my kid’s favorite part), and a Bible verse. Character training is such an important aspect of why we homeschool, and these cards have been a HUGE help in doing so.
Wrapping up!
I am so thankful for the recommendations of other homeschool mamas. I hope this list of Christian homeschool resources is helpful when you are deciding what to bring into your home this school year. If I had to pick my top recommendation for Bible time, it would be the The Ology book. It has had the biggest impact on our family.
